Whats News December 08

Tis the season to be Jolly…..How not to be the ‘fun police’

(whilst managing the risks of alcohol at work functions)

With the start of December, so too marks the start of holiday celebrations - end-of-year parties and drinks. We all want to have a goodtime, this means no harm to anyone as a result of too much alcohol being consumed. It is the responsibility of employers and managers to provide a safe work environment including at work-related functions where alcohol is served – such as the Christmas Party.

Why not turn your breath testing into a game?

    • Whoever has the highest reading shouts the next round - or some other small penalty.
    • Everyone throws their keys in a bowl for a lucky door prize and only gets them back once breathalysed.

No one wants to be known as the ‘fun police’ so heres a checklist of things you can do to host a fun filled and safe Christmas Party:

1.  Organise your party at a venue with easy access to public transport
2. Have clear start and finish times for your party
3. Organise activities and/or entertainment for everyone
4.
Make sure plenty of food is available for the duration of the party

5.

Hire staff who are trained in the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), or hold the party at a venue where staff are trained in RSA

6.  Provide plenty of non-alcoholic and low-alcohol drinks and encourage people to alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
7. Serve alcohol as ‘standard drinks’. This enables people to keep track of their alcohol consumption
8. Closely supervise and monitor younger people
9. Do not serve alcohol to people who are intoxicated
10. Provide safe transport home for any staff that require it
11. Make breathalysers are available for all staff. This will not only ensure that your staff make it home from your party but keep their life and at the very least their licence over the whole festive season
12. Keep your breathalyser calibrated. There is no point buying a breathalyser and then not being able to rely on the results.
13. Only Buy Standards Approved AS3547 Breathalysers. This is your assurance of consistent accurate results.
